The Fawley Refinery ( English Fawley Refinery ) is a petroleum refinery , which is located on Great Britain in the village of Fawley , Hampshire . It is the UK's largest refinery . It is located directly on the inlet of Southampton Water . To the south of the refinery was the Fawley power station , which was supplied with heavy fuel oil from the refinery.
history
The refinery was built in 1921 by the Atlantic, Gulf and West Indies Oil Company . It was sold to British-Mexican Petroleum as early as 1923 and again in 1926 became the property of the Anglo-American Oil Company , a subsidiary of Exxon ( ExxonMobil ), which still owns the refinery today. In 1939 the refinery was able to process 600,000 tons of crude oil per year, which corresponds to a daily capacity of 12,000 barrels .
After the end of the Second World War, the refinery was completely rebuilt and enlarged in 1949. At the opening on September 14, 1951, the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Clement Attlee , was present. This new facility could now process 157,000 barrels a day and was the third largest in the UK at the time. In 1958, the refinery was supplemented by various chemical plants, which carry out further processing of the crude oil components. In 2012, a crude oil distillation with the associated vacuum distillation was shut down.
Process equipment
Since the shutdown of a crude oil and vacuum distillation in 2012, the refinery still has three crude oil and vacuum distillations. In addition, a fluid catalytic cracker and various desulphurisation and refining plants are operated.
