The Fawley power station was an oil-fired steam power station located in the southern English county of Hampshire near the town of Fawley in the District of New Forest . The building owner of the plant, which was built between 1964 and 1971, was the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). It was decommissioned in 2013 by the owner and operator RWE npower , one of the legal successors of the CEGB, based on EU Directive 2001/80 / EC of October 23, 2001 on the limitation of pollutant emissions from large combustion systems to the air .
The water from the inlet Southampton Water served as a heat sink to cool the condensers , which is why the power station does not have a cooling tower . The heavy oil fuel was supplied via a product line from the nearby Fawley oil refinery. In addition, a small port with an unloading pier was built directly at the power plant in order to be able to deliver oil by tanker.
Fawley tunnel
To connect to the high-voltage network, a line tunnel was built under Southampton Water to the town of Chilling on the east bank, as an overhead line would have hindered shipping to Southampton due to the restricted headroom . The tunnel has a length of 3.2 km and a diameter of approx. 3 meters. In the construction were cast iron tubbing rings having 12 feet outside diameter (equivalent to 3.66 m) is used.
Trivia
The power plant has served as a location for movies and commercials several times. The futuristically designed building, which houses the control center, was the backdrop for the "World Control Center" in the film Rollerball in 1975 . In November 2015, recordings for Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation were shot on the premises. In 2017, the shooting of the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story of the Star Wars franchise took place on the power plant premises.
