from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fencing championships of the German Gymnastics Federation in 1931 were held in Kassel on August 1st and 2nd . There were only team competitions in saber fencing. The tournament was the fourth edition of a team championship organized by the German Gymnastics Federation . In parallel to the German gymnastics association, the German Fencing Association held its own individual and team championships . The winner was the Middle Rhine district with fencers Wilhelm Schöndube , August Heim , Kurt Wahl , A. Bauer and Julius Thomson .

Mode and organization

In regional preliminary rounds, five district teams qualified for the final in Kassel. However, the district of Bavaria did not appear in the final, although it had qualified. Each team fought against each other. The individual teams consisted of four fencers and one substitute fencer.

In a team fight, each fencer fought against all fencers of the opposing team for five hits. Each individual battle was led by a referee consisting of a referee, a chairman and four referees and lasted a maximum of eight minutes. After the time had elapsed, the difference between five and the number of hits from the fencer hit most often was added to the hits received by both fencers. The team with the higher number of wins won the fight. With the same number of wins, the team with fewer hits won. If these were also the same, the team fight ended in a draw. A win was rated with two points, a tie with one point.

Each district provided a referee, two further referees came from the host city of Kassel. The highest court of arbitration was formed by the fencing warden of the German Gymnastics Association, Ludwig Staffen, and the district fencing warden Schubert and Sevin. Team battles began on Saturday August 1st and continued on August 2nd. The venue was the gymnasium of Realgymnasium 2 near the main train station. The award ceremony was held on Sunday evening, and on Monday, August 3, a tour of the sights of Kassel and Wilhelmshöhe was on the program.
