Federico Wenzel

Federico Eduardo "Fritz" Wenzel (born July 15, 1924 in Arbolito , Uruguay , † May 4, 2011 ) was a German protozoologist .

Life

Wenzel was born in Uruguay as the son of the farmer Fritz Wenzel and his wife Elisabeth, née Schneider. When he was two years old, his parents returned to Germany with him, where he attended school in Hamburg and received his school-leaving certificate on March 20, 1943.

He studied natural sciences at the universities of Hamburg and Erlangen. After the preliminary examination in physics, he attended zoological and botanical lectures and exercises from the winter semester 1948/49. In the summer of 1949 he began under the guidance of his teacher Hans-Juergen Stammer at the Zoological Institute of the University of Erlangen in ciliates to do research on which he received his doctorate 1952nd From 1954 to 1956 he carried out research at the Federal Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry . After his habilitation, he was professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Hamburg and at the Zoological Museum there from 1968 until his retirement in 1989 .

Honor taxon

In honor of Wenzel named Wilhelm Foissner one of his first described Wimpertierchen Hemisincirra Hemisincirra wenzeli (Foissner, 1987).
