The purgatory is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 130-meter-long purgatory is located in the southwestern part of the old town island, the Marien Quartier , and connects Mühlenstrasse with the cathedral cemetery .

history

The street was first mentioned in a document in 1296 with the Latin name Platea parva, quae ducit ad sanctum Nicolaum de platea molendinorum (small street that leads from Mühlenstraße to St. Nikolaus , i.e. the Lübeck Cathedral ). From 1324 the name Veghevur ( purgatory ) is documented; it is a word game that takes up the ecclesiastical doctrine of purgatory reference, because the road leads straight to this very day as paradise known gate hall on the north facade of the cathedral at: To get to heaven, you have to go through purgatory . In 1852 the current street name was officially established.

Until the secularization in 1804, purgatory was part of the cathedral freedom , which was not subject to the council but to the cathedral chapter . Soon after the area was passed into the hands of the city, the existing medieval buildings were redesigned in a uniformly classicist manner and the canons ' curiae, which had been undeveloped until then, were given uniformly classicist new buildings.
