The Domkirchhof is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 210 meter long Domkirchhof is located in the southwestern part of the old town island, the Marien Quartier . It starts in front of the choir of the cathedral at the Musterbahn and initially runs in a northwesterly direction. At the purgatory , which flows in from the north , the road has a bend and from there runs west until it meets and ends at the armory with Parade , Hartengrube and the large building yard .

history

In a broader sense, the cathedral cemetery has existed since the 12th century in the form of the square, which is in front of the north, east and south sides of the cathedral and which served as a cemetery until 1832 . However, the name was only found very late, when it was expressly transferred to the previously unnamed street at its edge: in 1671 it was first named Thumskirchhof in a Senate ordinance . The current name was officially established in 1852.

Until the secularization of the Lübeck bishopric in 1803 after the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss, the cathedral cemetery, as part of the cathedral freedom, was subject to the territorial sovereignty of the cathedral chapter and not the city. On its east side were the bishop's court , the cathedral school and several canon curiae, all of which passed into municipal ownership. Even today, the development is characterized by public buildings.

Buildings

At the confluence with purgatory, the Lübeck orphanage had been located since 1810 , the building of which was destroyed in the great air raid on Lübeck in 1942 .

The air raid shelter from the Second World War on the corner of the parade was demolished in winter 2010/2011 to make room for an extension to the Marienkrankenhaus.

Lübeck Luther beech

To commemorate the 700th anniversary of the cathedral (1873), an offshoot of the Luther beech from the Luther monument (Steinbach) arrived in Lübeck near Bad Liebenstein in Thuringia and was planted in the cathedral cemetery.
