The Feldbahnmuseum Oekoven is a railway museum in the Rommerskirchen district of Oekoven that was created on a private initiative . It was founded on January 31, 1976 in Rheydt by a group of railway enthusiasts. The sponsor of the museum is the registered association "Feld- und Werksbahnmuseum Rommerskirchen-Oekoven eV". Today it is known nationwide and a popular destination for rail enthusiasts from all over Germany. Admission is free. The Feldbahnmuseum Oekoven operates a 1 km long museum field railway with a gauge of 600 mm under the name Gillbachbahn , on which the field railway vehicles are demonstrated in operation.

location

The museum is located right next to the Cologne-Mönchengladbach railway line at the former Oekoven station, on the site of the disused Oekoven mine connection station. It is also almost halfway between the Rommerskirchen district of Oekoven and the federal road 59 (Rommerskirchen - Grevenbroich ).

The focus of the museum is the extensive collection of vehicles in 600 mm gauge from the areas

In addition, there are a few other light rail vehicles with other gauges, provided that they are related to the region. A few years ago, a large exhibition hall was built on the museum grounds, in which the museum's exhibits are now on display, which were previously housed on the outside area. Another, somewhat smaller hall was built near this hall, which contains an exhibition on signal box technology .

The museum also has a 1 km long field railway and a small garden railway system that you can ride along with.

Garden railway

At the Neuratherfeld station there is a garden railway system with a track width of 7 1/4 inches (184 mm) and a track length of around 70 m.

Light rail line

The field railway museum operates a single-track field railway line ("Gillbachbahn") with a gauge of 600 mm, which leads from the Neuratherfeld station (including the museum hall) via the Oekoven K. switchback station (= small station) and Hp Werkstatt to the An der Lohe station. A few side tracks branch off from the Oekoven railway station to the workshop, and a side track from Oekoven K. originally led to the former DB signal box. This track was dismantled in 2014.

From the Neuratherfeld train station a small train runs every hour (23 minutes) to the terminus at An der Lohe , the train composition and mode of operation of which are mostly different. As a rule, a train made up of open and closed passenger cars from the museum travels with a historic light rail locomotive (steam or diesel). After only three minutes of travel time, the direction of travel must be changed at Oekoven K. station; this is done by moving the locomotive. After stopping at the Hp workshop, this train leaves the actual museum grounds and goes to the terminus at An der Lohe .

This stretch is located in a narrow wooded area between the railway line of the DB AG on the one side and the fields on the other side. Until 1970, this strip of forest was the area on which the freight tracks of the Oekoven station were located. This freight yard was operated jointly by the connecting railway of the Neurath mine and the DR / DB until 1970 , and then gradually dismantled.

In An der Lohe , the direction of travel must be changed for the return trip by repositioning the locomotive. On the Oekoven K. and Neuratherfeld section , the train is usually pushed.

On the operating days, a total of eight pairs of trains run according to the timetable, the journey time for a round trip including transfer at the intermediate and terminus stations is a total of 34 minutes.
