The field service mark 1840 was donated on June 14, 1840 by Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse-Darmstadt , on his father's birthday , and was available to all soldiers who served or had served in the Grand Ducal Hessian troops - regardless of whether they were combatants or non-combatants a campaign between 1780 and 1866 - to be awarded. From 1840 to 1866, 30,287 units were issued.

The award is a round medal with a rim made from bronze from Hessian guns . On the front there is a wreath tied at the bottom with a double bow, which is made of oak leaves on the right and bay leaves on the left. In the middle the curved letter "L" (for Ludwig), above a stylized crown. Below that, in two lines, is GESTIFTET AM / 14 JUNE 1840 . Also on the back is the oak / laurel wreath and centered the four-line inscription FOR / TREUEN / DIENST / IM / WARE . The field service badge was designed by the Darmstadt medalist Christian Schnitzspahn.

The award was worn on a red ribbon with two narrow red and white side stripes on the left side of the chest.
