, The material maintenance level defines the type, scope and implementation of technical inspections, maintenance , repairs and overhauls on vehicles and technical equipment. Material conservation levels are used in civil protection and the military.

Civil Protection (Germany)

Until the disaster control central workshops were closed , there was a 3-part subdivision of the material maintenance levels for vehicles and equipment.

In the meantime, a distinction is only made between two levels of material conservation. Level 1 includes material maintenance and simple work by trained and instructed helpers on site, such as testing traffic safety on motor vehicles or functional testing of telecommunications equipment. Any additional maintenance and repair work (level 2) is carried out by private specialist companies or municipal facilities (workshop of the fire brigade or other municipal services).

armed forces

There are four defined material maintenance levels (MES, abbreviation Bundeswehr)

  1. Function check, easy maintenance and care by the user (technical service before, during and after use)
  2. Simple repair work on site
  3. Replacement of assemblies, troubleshooting and testing, difficult repair work
  4. Factory or depot repair work, repair of assemblies, technical material changes

In the early days of the Bundeswehr, a distinction was made between up to six levels of material maintenance depending on the type of service. In addition, there were differences in the individual levels with regard to the personnel responsible, the tools required and the use of spare parts (not shown in the table).
