Gerd Blum

Gerd Blum (* 1965 in Singen am Hohentwiel ) is a German art historian and writer. He is Professor of Art History at the Art Academy in Münster and Honorary Professor at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna.

Life

Blum studied art history, philosophy and classical archeology in Munich , Bochum , Berlin , Pisa and Basel . He did his doctorate on the painter Hans von Marées , who is considered a forerunner of non-representational art . In 1997 he was a research assistant at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , and from 1998 to 2001 research assistant in the Art Research Group at the University of Konstanz .

In 2001, Blum became Professor of Art History at the Art Academy in Münster , and in the summer semester of 2017 he was also honorary professor at the Institute for Art History at the University of Vienna. In 2004/05 he took on a teaching position at the University of Witten / Herdecke . In 2007/2008 he taught as a visiting professor at the University of Heidelberg . From October 2010 to September 2011 he was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Konstanz ( Cluster of Excellence “Cultural Foundations of Integration”).

In 2011 , Blum completed his habilitation at the University of Basel with the font Idealer Ort und Staged Aussicht. Architecture and Landscape in the Italian Renaissance . In the summer semester of 2014 he was visiting professor at the Art History Institute of the University of Vienna , and in autumn 2015 he was visiting scholar at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University in Shanghai.

Blum researches and publishes on architecture, art and art theory of the Italian Renaissance. Another focus is art and photography of the 19th and 20th centuries and the present. In 2011 a biography of the Italian author, painter and architect Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574) was published. In 2015 he published the revised version of his habilitation thesis, the first monographic study on views and viewing windows in the history of architecture.
