Gerhard Pfefferkorn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard Erich Pfefferkorn (born March 31, 1913 in Hausdorf ; † June 29, 1989 in Münster ) was a German physicist. As a researcher, he was mainly active in applied physics , with a focus on medical physics and electron microscopy .

Life

During his studies, Gerhard Pfefferkorn joined the Christian student union Freiburg Wingolf , later also the Berlin Wingolf and the Munster Wingolf, in which he continued to be involved into old age.

In 1982 the annual conference of the American Society for Electron Microscopy was named after him in the "Pfefferkorn Conference" and was held after his death until the end of the 1990s. He was an honorary member of the British " Royal Microscopical Society , Electron Microscopy Section". In 1986 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class.

research

After studying physics at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin , Pfefferkorn received his doctorate in 1938 with a thesis on "X-ray investigations into the structure of lead acid and its behavior at higher temperatures". As a young assistant he worked at the research laboratory for electron physics in Berlin-Lichterfelde under the direction of Manfred von Ardenne , who became his mentor. There he began his first research in the field of scanning electron microscopy . After his military service in a research department of the army under General Erich Schumann , he continued his work in scanning electron microscopy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, where he later became director of the Institute for Medical Physics. It was here in 1965 that he commissioned the first SEM on mainland Europe and continued research into the application of electron microscopy, especially in the life sciences and medicine. His research group succeeded, among other things, in the first SEM image of asbestos fibers for detection in lung tissue.
