Rock paintings of the Helan Mountains

Rock paintings of the Helan Mountains ( Chinese  贺兰 山 岩画 , Pinyin Hèlán shān yánhuà , English Rock Painting in Helan Mountain ) in Helan County , Ningxia , China, is a generic term for the numerous rock paintings discovered in over 20 different locations.

It distinguishes between different phases of the formation, ranging from the time before the spring and autumn period and Warring States Period until the time of the Xixia Dynasty (Tanguts) and Mongolian Dynasty .

Sheep, horses, cattle, deer, dogs and heavenly bodies are among the motifs of the rock art.

The Helan Mountains have been inhabited by different nationalities since ancient times: Xirong西戎, Xiongnu匈奴, Xianbei鲜卑, Chile敕 勒, Tujue突厥, Huihu回鹘, Tanguts (Dangxiang 党 项), Tibetans (Tubo 吐蕃) and Mongols . This diversity is also reflected in the works of art.

Since 1996, the site has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Ningxia (4–193).
