Scientific name
Sorbus rupicola
( Syme ) Hedl.

The rock whitebeam ( Sorbus rupicola ) is a rare species of the Sorbus aria group. It is widespread in the British Isles (Ireland, Scotland, England) as well as in the southern Scandinavian region (southern and central Norway, Sweden), but mostly occurs only locally in small stocks. Preferably it occurs on base-rich substrate at forest edges and bushes.

The trees of the rock whitebeam usually reach heights of three to five meters. The species reproduces apomictically ( Apomixis ) and is believed to have originated from auto- polyploidization of the whitebeam in the true sense ( Sorbus aria s.str. ). It has a tetraploid set of chromosomes (2n = 4x = 68).
