features

butterfly

The moths have a wingspan of 19 to 24 millimeters for the males and 14 to 20 millimeters for the females. Their front wings are narrow, elongated and have a yolk yellow to orange basic color, from which three transverse rows formed from black dots stand out. Specimens from the Alps are darkened smoke gray, especially in the root area. The rear wings have the same basic color as the front wings and also show several distinct black points in the border area. The abdomen has a silky black sheen and yellow hairs on the two rearmost segments.

Caterpillar

Young caterpillars are flesh-colored, the adult caterpillars are black-brown. They then have a conspicuous yellow pattern of spots and are provided with black warts on which brownish and blackish mixed hair stands.

Similar species

There is a similarity to the lichen bear ( Setina aurita ), but the black dots on the forewings often run into stripes.

The stone lichen bear ( Setina irrorella ) only shows one to three very small black dots on the hind wings or the speckles are completely absent. The same applies to the yellow alpine lichen bear ( Setina alpestris ).

With wing spans between 25 and 34 millimeters, the aforementioned three species are also larger than the rock lichen bear and have wider forewings.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of the species extends from western France through Central Europe to the Volga region and the Altai . In the Alps it can still be found at an altitude of 2600 meters. It prefers to colonize steppe-like short grass slopes as well as stone and rocky slopes.

Way of life

The moths form two generations a year, which can be found in the months April to June and July to September. They are diurnal. The males fly in the sunshine, the females sit on grass and are slow to fly. The caterpillars live from late summer, feed on different types of lichen , overwinter and pupate in spring.

Danger

The rock lichen bear occurs only in a few German federal states, has been lost in some areas and is listed in category 1 (“critically endangered”) on Germany's red list .
