Mont Terri rock laboratory

The Mont Terri rock laboratory is an underground geological laboratory in Mont Terri near Saint-Ursanne in the Swiss Jura .

The purpose of the laboratory is to research Opalinus Clay formations with a view to the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. It is operated by the Federal Office for Topography . The rock laboratory has existed since 1996 and is 300 meters below the surface of the earth. Currently (as of January 2019) it is being tested whether the tunnel can be used as a CO 2 storage facility . It can be reached via a tunnel on the A16 motorway .
