Rock paintings in Sweden

The rock carvings at Järrestad near Simrishamn in Skåne are among the best preserved petroglyphs in Sweden . They are located on a limestone outcrop about one kilometer north of Järrestad on the road to Gladsax . The rock slab with over 1200 pictures on a 500 m² slab is one of the largest scratches in Scandinavia .

The rock carvings ( Swedish Hällbilder or Hällristningar) cover an area of 22 to 23 meters and consist of more than 700 bowls , 25 ships, six riders on horseback, four spirals, four animal figures including snakes, three wheel crosses and some weapon images, including a figure of a dagger ax . Best known is a large human figure called a "dancer". It may have suffered damage recently.

In addition, about 210 soles of the feet are depicted, 130 of them with completely scratched toes. They are positioned so that the traces of the "invisible deity" (as they are interpreted) go down the hill to the south. But the interpretations are varied.

There are three low burial mounds from the Younger Bronze Age nearby . The largest measures twelve meters in diameter and is almost a meter high. The dolmen Jarlsdösen is about 1.5 km south .
