Simrishamn is a place ( Tatort ) in the southern Swedish province of Skåne län and the historic province of Schonen , located on the Baltic Sea .
The name of the port city is derived from the words simris for spring or water-rich area and hamn for port. From here there is a ferry connection to Allinge-Sandvig on the Danish island of Bornholm . Simrishamn is the capital of the municipality of the same name .
history
Initially, Simrishamn was a small fishing village supplying the town of Tumathorp to the east (today Östra Tommarp ). Like the entire region, it belonged to Denmark . In the Heimskringla it is reported how the Norwegian Sigurd Jorslafare sailed to Simrishamn (Svimvaros) in 1123 and then plundered the city of Tumathorp.
The Church of St. Nicolai is mentioned in a document from 1161 and has been a point of reference for shipping since that time. After a big fire in Tumathorp, Simrishamn, then called Simmershavn , became more and more important. The town flourished during the reign of Christian IV , but in 1655 large parts of the population were struck down by the plague .
Through the Peace of Roskilde in 1658 Simrishamn came to Sweden along with Skåne and other areas. The city had Sweden's largest fishing fleet until the 1980s, but today it is severely affected by fishing restrictions and a lack of fish.
