Östra Tommarp is a place ( Tatort ) in the southern Swedish province of Skåne län and the historic province of Skåne .

The settlement is located about eight kilometers west of Simrishamn in the municipality of Simrishamn .

Remains of the monastery at the local church

In the Middle Ages the place was still called Tumathorp and was the main town in the region that was then part of Denmark . In 1155 the Archbishop Eskil von Lund founded a monastery in Tumathorp, which was run by monks of the Premonstratensian order . Tumathorp received city rights and developed into a religious and economic center. In addition to the monastery, there was also a royal mint, a hospital and several mills.

The decline began with a big fire in the city in 1304. In the following time Tumathorp lost its position to the place Simrishamn, which was on the coast and was therefore preferred by the German Hanseatic League . In 1537 Tumathorp lost its town charter when the Reformation spread across Denmark. The last monk was evicted by local farmers in 1570 and the monastery began to deteriorate.

Today there are only remains of the monastery south of the local church that are being archaeologically examined. The center of Östra Tommarp is now further north on the Ystad – Simrishamn railway line . The former train station, the last stopping point, was closed in 2003, so that the nearest train station has since been in Gärsnäs, a good three kilometers to the west .
