Simrishamn is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the southern Swedish province of Skåne län and the historic province of Skåne . The main town of the municipality in the Österlen region is Simrishamn .

geography

About half of the community area is covered with arable land. The other half are forest, meadows and buildings. The northern part of the municipality is hilly and has larger forest areas. The highest point is the Urberg Stenshuvud in the national park of the same name. The coast is very varied with rocky and sandy beaches. Due to the many summer houses in the municipality, the population doubles in the warm season.

history

In the Middle Ages , the town of Östra Tommarp (then Tumathorp ), which is eight kilometers west of the city of Simrishamn, was the main town of the municipality. It had its own mint and a larger monastery . After Tumathorp was almost completely destroyed in a fire in 1304 and the German Hanseatic League established itself in Simrishamn, Tumathorp lost its previous position and even lost its town charter in 1537.

economy

Economically, the community is characterized by tourism , craft businesses , fishing and fish processing as well as agriculture and fruit growing . The port of Simrishamn is the third largest fishing port in Sweden. The harvests from the approximately 500,000 fruit trees in the municipality account for more than a third of Swedish production. Tourism employs around 500 people.

Attractions

A few kilometers outside Simrishamn in the direction of Ystad is the medieval castle Glimmingehus . In Kivik is held every year a large market and near the city lies the grave of Kivik .
