Window handle
A window handle (also handle or window handle ) is a control element for opening, tilting and closing windows . Similar to doors, window handles can be equipped with locking cylinders that allow the window to be locked; a lockable window handle, which must withstand at least 100 Nm , is mandatory for burglar-resistant windows and balcony doors. Development, description
Modern window handles replace in combination with special locks usually also the previously often encountered window latch that the window in position lock could. Historical tilt windows are often equipped with special tilt window latches that allow the window to be tilted in different positions.
Window handles are levers that snap into place in the starting position and in the various possible positions of the window handle; a term for this is also used with raster (RAL - quality-tested handles). There are different versions, most of the handles snap into place every 90 °, while various handles also snap into place every 45 °.
Possible positions of window handles are:
- Closed 0 °
- Rotate 90 ° (rotation position of the fitting, window can be rotated)
- Tilt 180 ° (tilt position of the hardware, window can be tilted)
- Swiveling up 135 ° (with lift & slide / tilt & slide fittings of sliding doors)
By turning the window handle, a gear integrated in the window fitting adjusts the window lock accordingly .
With sliding windows, the window handle also serves as a lever for moving the window in the upper and lower guide rails .
Metals are predominantly used as materials for window handles because they are quite resistant to attempted break-ins and the weather.
The colloquial term window olive takes up a shape aspect of earlier window handles, which resembled an olive that tapers from the center to the outer point.
Naming
Window handles were and are named both after their shape (see mushroom head bolt ) and after operation (rotary handle) or, in earlier times, sometimes after their developer.
Lockable window handles
Lockable window handles are window handles provided with a lock cylinder (and / or push button), which usually lock the window handle in the closed position so that it can no longer be turned. Contrary to popular belief that the window handle should prevent the window from being opened from the inside, it should prevent the fitting from being moved by a burglar . Should the intruder try to move the fitting from the outside , it would be much easier for him without a lockable handle on the inside. This would cause the mushroom pins to slip out of their striker and the window could be opened from the outside. Depending on the design, they offer more or less good protection against burglary . Some window handles can also be locked in the tilt position as baby protection. (Tilt-first handles in connection with tilt-first fittings (tilt first) allow the window to tilt in the 90 ° position before it can be rotated in the 180 ° position.)
