Ferd Johnson

Ferdinand "Ferd" Johnson (born December 18, 1905 in Spring Creek, Pennsylvania ; † October 14, 1996 in Irvine , California ) was an American cartoonist and author . He became known as the illustrator of the comic strip Moon Mullins , which appeared from 1923 to 1991.

life and work

Johnson, who had already won a cartoon competition at the age of twelve, studied briefly at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts after leaving school, but ended his studies early to become an assistant to Frank Willard , who shortly before did the daily strip Moon Mullins had started. Johnson met Willard while he was teaching at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In 1925, Johnson received his own comic book for the Sunday page with Texas Slim , which he held until 1928 and revived in 1940. After Willard's death, Johnson officially took over Moon Mullins, quitting Texas Slim . Johnson drew, supported by his son Tom, Moon Mullins for the past few years until he was hired in 1991.
