Description of Leitenberger's patented fire pump

Ferdinand Leitenberger (born June 30, 1799 in Reichstadt , Bohemia, † September 3, 1869 there ) was an Austrian fire service pioneer.

Life

Leitenberger was a younger son of Ignaz Leitenberger (born April 18, 1764 in Wernstadt, + December 26, 1839 in Reichstadt, district of Böhmisch Leipa), heir to the teat and calico, roller and copper plate printing factory in Neu-Reichstadt, the 1806 bought August Stark's calico printing works in Niemes and the grandson of the textile industrialist Johann Josef Leitenberger .

While his older brother Eduard Leitenberger (born September 6, 1794 in Reichstadt, + January 25, 1871 in Prague) became a partner in his father's factory in 1812, took over the business in 1832 and sold it to Jakob Fellner in 1854 due to financial difficulties, Ferdinand Leitenberger became Rittmeister with of the cavalry in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . He served in Galicia , Transylvania and Hungary . When he had to quit work due to illness in 1838 at the age of 39, he returned to his hometown.

The experiences he had as a soldier prompted him to organize a volunteer fire brigade . This was remarkable in that there was hardly anything like it before. He wrote down his idea for this fire-life-saving extinguishing system and was also heard by the mayor of Reichstadt. The Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I , who had lived temporarily at Reichstadt Palace since his abdication in 1848 , also supported him.

In 1851 he was able to found the Pompiers Corps in Reichstadt, of which he became the first captain. This fire brigade is considered to be the first volunteer fire brigade in the Austrian part of Austria-Hungary . He wrote down his experiences in his own fire brigade and used it to advertise the establishment of further new fire brigades, especially in the Bohemian region.

But Ferdinand Leitenberger was not only dedicated to the organization, he also developed an inexpensive alternative to the much more expensive hydrophore , the hose water feeder , which he also patented in Vienna in 1853 .

In addition to his work in developing a fire department, he was also successful as an inventor. For example, he patented a transportable flail threshing machine .
