Marie-Fernand Philippart (* 1870 in Belgium ; † 1934 ) was a Belgian industrialist and from 1919 to 1925 mayor of the southern French city of Bordeaux .

Life

Philippart owned a large oil mill in Bordeaux and also ran an import-export company. He quickly made a name for himself as "patron social" because he introduced the minimum wage and the eight-hour day in his companies without being required by law . He was subsequently elected mayor in November 1919. During his tenure, he continued his socially progressive course by founding the “Bordeaux Caisse pour allocations familiales”, an organization that gave financial support to mothers with young children. In addition, he promoted the idea of extensive social security , so he said in 1921:

"The worker must be insured against illness and unemployment so that he does not have to suffer from these events, from which one cannot protect oneself."

After Philippart was not re-elected in May 1925, he founded the “Comité bordelais des Assurances Sociales” in 1928, which was supposed to provide logistical support to companies in the implementation of social insurance.

A street in Bordeaux bears his name in his honor; Gaston Veuvenot Leroux also created a bust of him, which is exhibited in the Musée des beaux-arts de Bordeaux .
