Fernando Figueroa (* 1849 in Ilobasco ; † June 16, 1919 in San Salvador ) was President of El Salvador from May 22 to June 18, 1885 and from March 1, 1907 to March 1, 1911 .

Life

He married Luz Rodriguez in 1878. His children were: Coronel Felipe Figueroa, Héctor Figueroa, Fernando Figueroa, María Luisa Figueroa V. de Castillo, Luz Figueroa V. de Ávila and Carlota Figueroa. His grandchildren were: Fabio Castillo Figueroa, the painter Elsa Figueroa Magaña, Fernando Figueroa Magaña, Elizabeth Augusta Figueroa Magaña, Enriqueta Figueroa Magaña, Luz Castillo Figueroa de Paredes, Margoth Castillo Figueroa de Aguilará, María Luisa Castillo María Figueroa de González de Echeverría, Teniente Fernando Ávila Figueroa, Alberto Ávila Figueroa, Carmen Ávila Figueroa and Fermina Ávila Figueroa.

He was a member of the Partido Conservador . Military since his youth, he took part in the wars of 1863–1876 against Guatemala, 1871, 1872 in Sabana Grande and Santa Barbara and in 1873 against Honduras and the Battle of Amapala and became a general.

On May 14, 1885 Fernando Figueroa was under Rafael Zaldívar Deputy President and from May 22, 1885 Executive President. Rafael Zaldívar devoted himself to the fight against the Partido Liberal , which was temporarily supported by the government of Guatemala. Fernando Figueroa was Minister of Finance, Minister of the Interior, Minister of War and the Navy under Presidents Tomás Regalado (1898–1903) and Pedro José Escalón (1903–1907). With the support of Pedro José Escalón, he was elected president in a direct election.

On March 1, 1907, Fernando Figueroa took office as President, he supported Manuel Bonilla in Honduras from the Partido Conservador at the battle of Namasigüe . During this battle, the troops of the Partido Conservador from Honduras and El Salvador were slaughtered by the troops of the Partido Liberal from Nicaragua.

During this reign the constitution of August 13, 1886 was in effect. The president's salary was US $ 9,600 a year.

In 1908 El Salvador's trade surplus rose by $ 0.5 million to $ 1 million. A trade agreement Convention of Arbitration was ratified by parliament on May 1, 1909 with the USA .
