Fernando Garcia (born July 22, 1917 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese director and film critic.

Life

Garcia was a film critic since 1935. He became an executive in the production company of António Lopes Ribeiro , and was a production assistant for various films, including Aniki Bóbó by Manoel de Oliveira , O Pátio das Cantigas by Ribeirinho , and at Jorge Brum do Cantos João Ratão , in which he also had one of his occasional appearances as an actor.

In 1949 he left the production company and made his first own film. The semi-documentary Heróis do Mar ("Heroes of the Seas", the first line of Portugal's national anthem ) pays homage to the Portuguese North Atlantic fleets that supplied the country with bacalhau ( stockfish ). With Um Marido Solteiro ("A single husband") he shot a comedy in 1952 based on the success of the Portuguese film of the 30s and 40s, and in 1954 he filmed Agora é que são Elas! ("Now it's your turn!") The first female-only performance of one of the then popular Portuguese revue plays . O Cerro dos Enforcados ("Closure of the Hanged") was his last feature film, a film adaptation of the play O Defunto ("The Deceased"), by Eça de Queiroz . He then made various documentaries before reporting on film art and new films as a film critic in his own television programs in the 1960s. At the time he was also President of the Portuguese Filmmakers Union.
