Fernando Lázaro Carreter (born April 13, 1923 in Saragossa , † March 4, 2004 in Madrid ) was a Spanish author, Romance scholar, Hispanist, linguist and literary scholar.

life and work

Lázaro Carreter went to school in Saragossa until 1941 (one of his teachers was José Manuel Blecua Teijeiro ). He studied at the University of Saragossa (with Ynduráin Hernández ) and from 1943 at the University of Madrid . In 1947 he received his doctorate there from Dámaso Alonso with the work Las ideas lingüísticas en España durante el siglo XVIII (Madrid 1949, Barcelona 1985).

From 1949 Lázaro Carreter was professor at the University of Salamanca (from 1962 to 1968 also dean). From 1971 to 1978 he taught at the Autonomous University of Madrid , then until his retirement in 1988 at the Complutense University .

He was the author of three plays.

Lázaro Carreter was a member of the Real Academia Española from 1972 and its president from 1992 to 1998. He has been awarded six honorary doctorates from Spanish universities and has received numerous prizes, including the Creu de Sant Jordi Prize (1983) and the Order of Alfonso X the Wise (Grand Cross).

Prizes, schools, libraries and streets all bear his name. His grave is in Magallón, Zaragoza Province .
