Fernando Machado Soares

Fernando Machado Soares (born September 3, 1930 in São Roque do Pico , Azores , † December 7, 2014 in Almada ) was a Portuguese fado interpreter ( fadista ).

Life

Machado Soares studied law at the University of Coimbra in the 1950s . In addition to his studies, he performed as a singer of the classic Fado de Coimbra and during this time also recorded several records. He gave concerts all over Portugal, but also in Brazil and in the then African colonies of Portugal. In 1957 he recorded a record as Coimbra Quintet with the guitarists Jorge Godinho and António Portugal as well as with Manuel Pepe and Levi Baptista on the violas baixo (bass guitars) in Madrid . Machado Soares was one of the most important innovators of Fado de Coimbra as a singer, but also as a composer and lyricist, together with Luís Goes and Zeca Afonso .

After graduating, Machado Soares retired from the music scene, only performing in 1961 on a tour of the United States. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974 he returned to the stage and toured internationally several times. His most famous song and one of the most famous fados from Coimbra is the Balada da Despedida , his farewell song to student life.
