Luís Goes

Luís Fernando de Sousa Pires de Goes , also Luíz Goes , (born January 5, 1933 in Coimbra , † September 18, 2012 in Mafra ) was a Portuguese Fado interpreter ( Fadista ).

Life

Luís Goes was introduced to Fado at an early age by his uncle Armando Goes, a well-known singer of the classic Fado de Coimbra . In 1952 Luís Goes began studying medicine at the University of Coimbra . In the same year he released his first record. In the following years he was one of the most important innovators of Fado de Coimbra together with Fernando Machado Soares and Zeca Afonso . Like Machado Soares, he recorded a record as a Coimbra Quintet with guitarists Jorge Godinho and António Portugal and with Manuel Pepe and Levi Baptista on violas baixo (bass guitars) . Goes wrote a total of 25 fados and 18 ballads, including his farewell song to his student days, the Fado de Despedida .

In 1958 Goes completed his medical studies and later worked as a stomatologist . In addition, he continued to appear as a fadista.
