Fernelius is an impact crater in the south of the front of the moon , southeast of Mare Nubium , northwest of Stöfler crater , the edge of which it touches, and southwest of Kaiser . The rim of the crater is eroded and is overlaid by the side crater Fernelius A in the west , the interior is largely flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French doctor and astronomer Jean François Fernel .
