Ferocactus fordii is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Ferocactus fordii usually grows individually with spherical to short cylindrical shoots and reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters with diameters of 25 centimeters. There are about 21 humped ribs . The thorns are gray. The four crossed central spines are transversely banded, flattened or angular and are up to 7 centimeters long. The top three central spines are ascending and straight, the bottom is descending and has a curved or hook-shaped tip. The upper two protrude from the approximately 17 radial spines, the rest are radiating.

The funnel-shaped flowers are pinkish purple to pink in color. They reach a length of up to 3 centimeters and have the same diameter. The egg-shaped fruits are pink to yellow.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus fordii is distributed in the western part of the Mexican state of Baja California in a small area along the coast.

It was first described as Echinocactus fordii in 1900 by Charles Russell Orcutt . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1922 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
