Ferocactus latispinus is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet latispinus means 'with broad spines'.

description

Ferocactus latispinus grows individually with depressed spherical to flattened, light green shoots and reaches heights of up to 30 centimeters with diameters of 40 centimeters. There are about 21 sharp-edged, humped ribs . The thorns are reddish to yellowish to whitish in color. Of the four central spines, the upper three are ascending, straight, flattened and banded transversely. They are up to 4 inches long and up to 4 millimeters wide. The lowest central spine reaches a length of up to 5 centimeters and a width of up to 9 millimeters. It is flattened, transversely banded and has a curved or hooked tip. The 5 to 15 expanded radial spines are straight or slightly curved. The majority of them are transversely banded, some are flattened.

The funnel-shaped flowers are a bit purple-pink or yellow and can reach a length of up to 4 centimeters and have the same diameter. The flowers are densely covered with brick-shaped scales that are ciliate. The up to 2 centimeters long fruits are egg-shaped and covered with scales.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus latispinus is common in central Mexico .

It was first described as Cactus latispinus in 1824 by Adrian Hardy Haworth . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Ferocactus in 1922 .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Ferocactus latispinus subsp. latispinus
  • Ferocactus latispinus subsp. spiralis (Karw. ex Pfeiffer) NPTaylor

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
