Ferocactus schwarzii is a species of the genus Ferocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Ferocactus schwarzii grows individually with spherical, ellipsoidal or broadly egg-shaped, light green shoots and reaches heights of up to 80 centimeters with a diameter of 50 centimeters. There are 13 to 19 sharp-edged ribs , which are initially rounded. The one to five, slightly backwards curved and slightly protruding yellow thorns turn gray with age. They are 0.5 to 5.5 inches long.

The yellow flowers , which do not open wide, appear in a circle around the apex. They reach a length of up to 5 centimeters and have a diameter of 4 centimeters. The 1.3 to 2 centimeters long, almost spherical fruits are green-olive in color. They dry up and tear open lengthways.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Ferocactus schwarzii is common in the Mexican state of Sinaloa . The first description was in 1955 by George Edmund Lindsay .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
