Ferrite former

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ferrite formers are elements that are added to liquid steel in order to ensure that ferrite is still in the mixed crystal after cooling at room temperature . The ferrite area in the iron-carbon diagram is expanded by raising the A1 temperature and reducing the pearlite growth rate.

The following elements expand the ferrite area homogeneously: Cr , Mo , V , Al , Ti , P , Si , Be . The following elements stabilize the ferrite through heterogeneous limitation of the austenite area: Nb , Ta , Ce , Zr .

As a rule of thumb, the most important ferrite formers can be arranged ( Cr Al Ti Ta Si Mo V W ) so that they sound like a Russian name when pronounced: "Craltitasimovw"
