The Connor Pass (also Conor Pass , Irish An Chonair ) is located on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland and is the second highest pass in Ireland with a height of 456 m .

The pass area is a refuge for an “alpine flora” that survived the end of the Ice Age glaciation. Although every plant found here is found in a few other places in Ireland, this is the only place where they appear together.

There is a parking lot at the top of the pass, from which one has a view to the north towards Brandon Bay and Mount Brandon . There are several dead ice holes in the valley through which the Cloghane River flows. Starting from the village of Cloghane you can see a dead straight pilgrimage route that leads past them.

The lakes Lough Adoon, Lough Camclaun and Lough Doon , the latter only one kilometer from the pass, near the road, with a small waterfall, are located in so-called Corries ( Karen ). In a few places the effect of the ice can be seen more clearly than in the Corries. In fact, a major breakthrough in understanding glaciation was made at Lough Doon in 1849 when alpine climber John Ball (1818–1889) realized that the corries are of the same species as the cirques of Switzerland.

traffic

The actual pass road of the Connor Pass is approx. 1.4 km long and very narrow. It is blocked for vehicles wider than 6 feet (1.83 m). In some places there are alternative bays to allow oncoming traffic to pass. At rush hour, single-lane traffic leads to delays. Avoiding the Connor Pass requires a detour of about 40 km.
