The Ferrocarril Decauville Oswald was a 14 km long field railway with 600 mm gauge northwest of Pirané in the Argentine province of Formosa operated from 1916 to 1954 .
location
The fixed main line consisted of steel rails on wooden sleepers. It led from the Palo Santo station on the meter- gauge line Formosa - Embarcación ( Ramal C25 del Ferrocarril Belgrano ( es ) ) to the sawmill of Obraje Oswald.
The route was part of a 72 km long network from Palo Santo to the Rio Bermejo , called trochita angosta or quebrachero because it was used for the transport of quebracho hardwood ( Schinopsis lorentzii and Schinopsis balansae ) required for the production of tannins .
history
Simón Ostwald was one of the first Jewish immigrants in Argentina in 1860. He founded a newspaper and book publisher and was a pioneer in the printing industry. By 1918 he bought 20,000 hectares of land in Formosa.
His estate was managed by Ignacio Mantaras. For the Feldbahn he procured a steam locomotive from Orenstein & Koppel in his own name. There was also a petrol-powered draisine on the route .
