Festival of 1000 wines

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Festival of 1000 Wines (also known as the Burgenland Wine Week ) was an annual wine festival in Eisenstadt in Burgenland from 1964 to 2010 . It was the largest wine event in Burgenland and was therefore often referred to as the regional wine diet.

history

The idea for the Festival of 1000 Wines was generated in the Eisenstadt castle café . Its owner, Fritz Kohlmann from Rheinhessen , shared the opinion with Franz Kröpfl that something had to be done for Eisenstadt. Then they sat down in the Eisenstadt Schwechaterhof, "invented" the wine week and founded the "Eisenstadt Exhibition Association". In addition to Fritz Kohlmann and Alois Kröpfl, Wilhelm Anderle, Hans Fröhlich, Rudolf Rötzer and Franz Tinhof were among the founding members. The exhibition association was founded in spring 1964 and the festival opened for the first time in Schwechaterhof on September 4th of the same year. In 1965 the first Burgenland wine queen was elected. The festival was later moved to the orangery in the palace gardens of Esterházy Palace and called the "Festival of 1000 Wines".

The festival usually took place at the end of August and lasted ten days. Wines from all of Burgenland's wine-growing regions were exhibited and tasted . Even in the 1980s, there were plenty of sweet wines available for tasting at the Festival of 1000 Wines in Eisenstadt. The event had the character of a folk festival with culinary offerings, open-air concerts and folk music.

From 20 to 29 August 2010 the event was held for the last time in the orangery in the palace gardens of Esterházy Palace and was then suspended due to financial losses. In the decade before the closure, most of the well-known wineries in Burgenland no longer took part in the Festival of 1000 Wines as exhibitors. Since 2011, instead of the Festival of 1000 Wines, the wine and enjoyment days have been held in the second half of August in the Eisenstadt pedestrian zone .
