Festa della Repubblica
Festa della Repubblica , Festival of the Republic , is Italy's national holiday celebrated on June 2nd each year . It commemorates the founding of the Italian Republic in 1946.
background
The day was set as a public holiday in commemoration of the referendum of June 2, 1946. At that time, the majority of Italians (12,717,923 to 10,719,284 votes) voted for the introduction of the republic and against the retention of the monarchy as a form of government . The Royal House of Savoy was then sent into exile. On June 2, 1946, after the end of the fascist dictatorship and more than 20 years after the last democratic parliamentary elections, a representative body was re-elected at national level, namely a constituent assembly that passed the constitution of the Italian Republic at the end of 1947 . For the first time women were admitted to the referendum and the elections to the constituent assembly, which is why this date also stands for the full political involvement of at least 50 percent of the Italian population. A women's suffrage had existed in Italy since 1925 only at the local level.
Celebrations
Since 1948 a military parade in honor of the republic has been held at the Imperial Forums in Rome in the morning. The Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team flies over the forums. In addition to this parade in the presence of the holders of the highest state offices, the protocol of the ceremony provides for the laying of a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier .
The celebrations continue in the afternoon in the gardens of the Quirinal Palace , the official residence of the President of the Italian Republic . The gardens will be opened to the public, who will be maintained by police and military orchestras, among others. The holiday is celebrated with receptions not only in Rome, but also in other Italian municipalities and at diplomatic missions abroad.
Legal bases
The Italian government introduced the national holiday with a decree of May 28, 1947. This was confirmed by the law of May 27, 1949 on public holidays in Italy . Between 1977 (law of March 5, 1977) and 2000 (law of November 22, 2000), the day was observed on the first Sunday in June, and since then it has been fixed again on June 2.
Others
From 1861 to 1946, the first Sunday in June was a national holiday. The holiday was called "Feast of the Unity of Italy and the Statute of the Kingdom" or Festa dell'Unità d'Italia e dello Statuto del Regno . The unification of the country and the constitution of the kingdom were celebrated on this day . This national holiday was celebrated for the first time on Sunday, June 2, 1861. Another major holiday was the ruling monarch's birthday. The referendum on the form of government took place on Sunday, June 2, 1946, the (last) national holiday of the Kingdom of Italy .
