from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Saintes Festival is an international classical music festival that has been held in Saintes every July since 1972. The main venue for the concerts is the Abbaye aux Dames Saintes .

The festival was founded by Alan Paquier. From 1981 to 2002 it was headed by Philippe Herreweghe , then by Stephan Maciejewski . Originally a pure baroque festival, it opened up to other musical epochs under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe. Particular emphasis is placed on showing what connects the musical eras. In addition to Bach , Handel and Vivaldi , the 2018 program also included works by Glass , Beethoven and Vaughn Williams .

Today the festival is one of the most important music festivals in France. Among the interpreters in recent years have been Philippe Herreweghe, Les Talens lyriques , the Collegium Vocale Gent , the Orchester des Champs-Élysées , Marc Minkowski , and Carolyn Sampson .
