Solids content

The solids content describes that part of a mixture which can be described as non- volatile . A mixture of organic solvents or water can be present as volatile components . The non-volatile content can consist of high molecular weight organic compounds (e.g. binders / polymers ) or solids (e.g. pigments ). In addition to the practical determination by weighing, before and after drying the mixture to be tested, the solids content can also be calculated if the composition is known. In addition to the solids content, the term "non-volatile content" or "nfA" is also used.

Execution and calculation

To determine the solids content, an empty, temperature-resistant vessel is first weighed [m (vessel)]. Then the sample, of which the solids content is to be determined, is placed in the vessel and the vessel including the sample is weighed [m (initial weight)]. In the case of very highly viscous samples, a highly volatile solvent can also be weighed onto the sample. The mass of this additional solvent is not included in the calculation. After the drying process , the sample including the dish is weighed again [m (dried)]. For greater precision , the empty and dried dishes are dried in a desiccator with a desiccant before the corresponding weighing .

The calculation takes place according to the following equation:

If, for example, 3g of binding agent is weighed into a container with a mass of 1.7g, and after drying, the residue and container weigh together 4.0g, the solid is calculated as follows:
