Lichauri fortress

The Fortress Lichauri (or Tschanieti ) ( Georgian ლიხაურის ციხე ) is a medieval fortress in the Georgian region of Guria in the municipality of Osurgeti between the villages of Lichauri and Tschanieti. According to legend, the fortress was built by the Georgian Queen Tamar in the 12th century. Hence the second name fortress from Tamar ( Georgian თამარის ციხე ).

In 1774 Lichauri was occupied by Turkish troops next to the fortresses Askana and Bukisziche . In the same year it was recaptured by the Imeretic King Solomon I and Prince of Gurien Mamia I. Gurieli .

At the end of the 19th century, the fortress served as a military base for the Russian army.
