The fortress Askana ( Georgian ასკანის ციხე ) is a medieval fortress in the Georgian region of Guria , in the ozurgeti municipality , in the village Mtispiri . It is located on the right bank of the Bachwiszqali River, between the Delemuri and Tapuriati Mountains.

The fortress was built in the 4th century. In 1774 it was occupied by the Turks with the fortresses Lichauri and Bukisziche . In the same year Askana was recaptured by the Imeretic King Solomon I and prince of Guria Mamia I. Gurieli . In 1805 the fortress was renovated by Kaichosro Batonishvili ; since then the former fortress has been the largest prison in the principality. In 1819 Ahmed-Pasha Chimschiaschwili tried to conquer the fortress. In 1828 it was occupied by Russian troops. Today Askana is badly damaged.

The fortress is made of stone. The height of the walls is six meters. The entrance to the fortress is on the southwest side. In the fortress there are a ruined palace and a basilica .
