Thera on the Tabula Peutingeriana (red circle)

The fortress Maslen nos ( Bulgarian крепост Маслен нос krepost Maslen nos ) was an ancient and medieval fortified settlement with a port on today's Bulgarian Black Sea coast . The fortress is located on the cape of the same name , where the former Roman way station Thera is believed to be. It was part of the fortifications of Apollonia Pontica . It is believed that the settlement was abandoned in the course of the barbarian invasions in the 5th and 6th centuries.

In the immediate vicinity is the religious complex Beglik Tash and the remains of the ancient city of Ranuli .

location

The fortress occupied the extreme edge of the cape, which is the southeasternmost point of the Meden rid range of hills . The Meden rid is part of the Strandschagebirge , which ends on the cape in a peninsula (north-south extension: approx. 4 km; east-west extension approx. 3 km) and protrudes into the Black Sea.

The fortress is located about 7 km northeast of Primorsko .

Underwater archeology

In the small bay immediately southwest of the cape was one of the fortress's harbors. Bulgarian underwater archeology began there in 1960 ; The leader of the expedition was Ivan Galabow (Bulgarian Иван Гълъбов ). The archaeological finds showed that in this small bay, which was in the slipstream of the prevailing wind direction, as early as the 6th century BC. BC smaller ships took refuge. There are numerous finds from late antiquity and the Middle Ages (5th to 14th centuries).
