Ranuli ( Bulgarian Ранули ) was an ancient port city at the mouth of the Ropotamo River in the Black Sea . The remains of the fortress wall are also known as the lion head stone formation . The remains of the city are located approx. 6 km north of Primorsko , approx. 12 km south of Sozopol and approx. 50 km south of Burgas in the middle of the nature protection complex Ropotamo .

The port city was built on a 100 m high plateau in the Meden rid chain of hills . The Meden rid is part of the Strandschagebirge , which ends in this area in a peninsula (north-south extension: approx. 4 km; east-west extension approx. 3 km) and into the Black Sea through several capes, including Maslen nos protrudes. The remains of the city wall follow the relief of the plateau and take up an area of 30,000 m².

Since Ranuli is in a nature reserve, archaeological excavations are prohibited. The above-ground remains were dated to the late Bronze Age and are associated with the Mycenaean culture .

The Ropotamo River encloses the plateau from the north and west and is now between 60 and 80 meters wide and up to 9 meters deep. The ancient and medieval street Via Pontica ran nearby .

Between Ranuli and the fortress Maslen nos , which was in the immediate vicinity, the religious complex Beglik Tash was built in the late Bronze Age .

The place has given its name to the Ranuli-Piedmont Glacier in Ellsworthland in Antarctica since 2012 .
