Feuerhand is the name of a German manufacturer of petroleum lamps . These were originally produced in Beierfeld , Saxony ; The history of the Feuerhand hurricane lanterns extends to the present day. Until the end of 2012, the lanterns were manufactured by Feuerhand GmbH in Hohenlockstedt , which was founded in 2003 . The daily production in 2011 was around 9000 pieces. A total of around 250 million Feuerhand kerosene lamps have been manufactured to date. An important sales market for Feuerhand hurricane lanterns are countries without a nationwide supply of electricity, including mostly African and Arab countries. In Germany, Feuerhand kerosene lamps were used as lanterns to secure construction sites (especially in road construction ) until the 1970s . One of the most popular lamp models from Feuerhand is the model 276 Baby Special (see adjacent photo), which is still offered by various retailers to this day. The company Feuerhand went in 2013 to over one hundred years of existence first in bankruptcy . The trademark rights have belonged to a company in the Petromax Group since autumn 2014 .

Company history

In 1880 Hermann Nier began manufacturing lanterns ( mixed air lanterns ) in the town of Beierfeld in the Ore Mountains . A patent was granted to Nier in 1906 for the glass lifting mechanism used in this mixed air lantern (the glass of Feuerhand lanterns can be lifted using a simple lever mechanism to light and also to extinguish the wick of the kerosene lamps) . The production of fresh air lanterns followed later . A few years later machine production of the storm lanterns began. This factory was founded by Ernst and Hermann Nier. In 1937 the number of lanterns sold was around 12 million. After the end of the Second World War , the company was expropriated and dismantled .

Ernst Bruno Nier was arrested by the Soviet armed forces . The brothers Woldemar and Curt Nier fled to West Germany and founded the Nier-Feuerhand OHG Hohenlockstedt in 1949 .

In 2006 the Feuerhand company was bought up by the Vollmann company from Gevelsberg .

In October 2012, insolvency proceedings were opened due to the combination of high wage costs and declining sales . The aim was to find new investors in addition to the agreement of lower salaries to keep operations going. Shortly beforehand, on September 21, 2012, the “Feuerhand” brand was transferred to Müller & Co with no equivalent. The IG-metal speaks of a business mystery .

On January 4, 2013, the bankruptcy administrator announced the failure of the bankruptcy proceedings. Towards the end of 2013, production was resumed with new employees.

In October 2014, the Feuerhand brand was taken over by the Petromax Group. Since January 23, 2015, the trademark has been registered to the company Merkur Verwaltungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, Magdeburg. According to the company register, the object of the company is the profit-oriented issuing of licenses for products, as well as the implementation of all measures and legal transactions conducive to this purpose.

Company name and trademark

The company name of the Feuerhand company does not refer to the fact that the users of the kerosene lamps have fire in their hands, but to the fact that the lanterns were the first in Germany to be hot-dip tinned . The company's trademark shows a graphically stylized left hand from the side, with the palm facing up; a fire burns on the palm of the hand. The majority of Feuerhand lanterns have this trademark stamped on the screw cap of the fuel tank. The top of the lamp's fuel tank and - in the case of newer versions of the lamps - their protective glass also bear the company logo.
