history

Fire Department Badges of Honor in silver and gold

On June 25, 1956, by order of the state government of Baden-Württemberg, the fire brigade decoration was donated in silver for 25 years and in gold for 40 years of service and the special level of fire brigade decoration. On December 1, 2011, the foundation order was revised by the state government and a fourth stage was added, the fire brigade decoration in gold in a special version for 50 years of service.

In July 2017, the Baden-Württemberg Minister of the Interior, Thomas Strobl, decided, at the suggestion of the State Fire Brigade Association, to propose another change to the foundation order, whereby the bronze medal for 15 years of service should be introduced as the fifth stage.

Authorized to wear the fire brigade badge of honor are not only the persons to whom the badge was actually awarded, but also holders of the certificate of honor awarded from 1945 to 1956 in the absence of a badge.

stages

The fire brigade decoration has been awarded in five stages since 2018:

  1. Fire brigade decoration in bronze for at least 15 years of service
  2. Fire brigade decoration in silver for at least 25 years of service
  3. Fire brigade decoration in gold for at least 40 years of service
  4. Fire brigade decoration in gold in a special design for at least 50 years of service
  5. Special level of the fire brigade decoration for special services to the fire extinguishing system or particularly courageous and determined behavior in fire brigade operations.

The Fire Brigade Decoration of Honor of the Special Level is a very rare award. For example, it was awarded only once in 2000.

Design and way of carrying

The center of the badge of honor is a 43 mm high and wide, white enamelled cross made of copper in the form of a Templar cross and four flames on each cross bar. In the middle of the cross of flames is the small state coat of arms of Baden-Württemberg with the three striding Staufer lions and the leaf crown , which as the people's crown indicates the sovereignty of the people after the end of the monarchy. State coat of arms and the cross of flames are framed by a ring with the inscription "For merits in fire protection"

The medal in silver for 25 years of service, in gold for 40 years of service and in gold in a special version for 50 years of service are worn on a red-white-red ribbon on the left side of the chest, the special level as a cross on the left Chest side. Since the original award is only worn on the day of the award, all four levels of the honorary badge can also be worn as a ribbon buckle (with miniature cross) in the standard size of 25 mm. The ribbon buckle of the levels silver , gold and gold in a special design are - like the ribbon also - red-white-red, the ribbon buckle of the special level is black.

When the honorary badge is presented, the awardees also receive an award certificate. The award cases of the older version were made of crimson cardboard with the inscription year in the oak leaf wreath and underneath in capital letters Baden-Württemberg. The newer cases are plastic and dark red.

Further awards for fire service members

In addition to the Fire Brigade Badge of Honor, there are other awards that can be given to members of the Baden-Württemberg fire brigades to honor special merits or achievements. However, these are not state-recognized honors of the state fire brigade association and - in contrast to the fire brigade badge of honor - not a state award within the meaning of the Act on Awards of the State of Baden-Württemberg (Awards Act) of 23 June 2009:

  • Albert Bürger Medal (2013)
  • Medal of Honor of the Baden-Württemberg State Fire Brigade Association in silver and gold (2011)
  • Badge of Honor of the Baden-Württemberg State Fire Brigade Association in silver and gold (1959)
  • Fire service badge in bronze, silver and gold (1963)
  • Badge of skill test emergency driver (2004)
  • Badge of Honor of the Baden-Württemberg Youth Fire Brigade in silver and gold (1982)
  • Florian Badge of the Baden-Württemberg Youth Fire Brigade (1977)
