The Bern fire brigade was founded in 1908 and is the professional fire brigade of the Swiss federal city of Bern . history

The Bern professional fire brigade was founded in 1908. The task of the only professional firefighter at the time was not to fight the fire, but to maintain a technically sophisticated electric vehicle. The volunteer fire brigade was still responsible for the operations. The increasing use of technology in fire fighting as well as the social and economic changes meant that more and more people were permanently employed. This happened in several steps, mainly between 1930 and 1950. The 24-hour service was introduced in 1932 and with the move to the Hauptwache in 1935, the buildings that are necessary for a 24-hour service were also occupied.

The main station of the professional fire brigade was in Spitalacker until 2014 , at Viktoriastrasse 70. On December 4, 2014, the professional fire brigade moved into its new base in the Forsthaus West.

In addition to the members of the professional fire brigade of the city of Bern, there is also the voluntary fire brigade . This consists of the night watch and the fire corps. The night watch reports directly to the head of deployment and planning of the professional fire brigade. The members of the night watch perform so-called alternative services with the professional fire brigade. This means that if the team of the professional fire brigade falls below the target level, one or a maximum of two night watchmen step in and work for the professional fire brigade. The Brandcorps currently consists of 3 companies (Bern-Ost, Bern-West, Bern-Land) which report to the commander of the Brandcorps. In 2012, companies 1 and 2 merged. In addition, the names of the companies were changed. The Brandcorps companies have so-called Rapid Response Groups (SEG), which are automatically alerted to the professional fire brigade in the event of a fire alarm.

On January 1, 2020 , the fire brigade merged with the medical police , civil defense and the district office for protection and rescue in Bern . The operations center of the canton police in Bern is expected to be integrated into the joint cantonal operations center (KEZ) from 2021 .

Professional fire brigade course

The Bern professional fire service conducts a professional fire service course at irregular intervals, depending on requirements. This second training lasts a year and a half. The training is divided into three thematic school blocks, which are completed at the higher technical school for rescue professions HFRB in Zurich, as well as practical parts which have to be completed at the respective professional fire service locations. The training to become a professional firefighter is completed with the professional examination and is confirmed by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation with a specialist certificate.

Special forces

Professional firefighters are all-rounders, everyone can do everything. But there are isolated areas that are covered by specialists. These include B. Rescue specialists Helikopter RSH, who work closely with Alpine Rescue Switzerland and Rega . Further specialists are assigned to the so-called Tactical Fire Brigade Task Force Unit, which, together with the Enzian Special Unit of the Bern cantonal police and the Tactical Medical Unit of the Bern Medical Police, are deployed throughout the Canton of Bern.
