Michael Neher (* 31 March 1798 in Munich , † 4. December 1876 ) was a German painter of the Biedermeier .

Life

Neher was the son of the painter Joseph Ignaz Neher from Biberach an der Riss . From 1813 he attended the art academy in his hometown for three years . a. Student of the court painter Matthias Klotz and the genre painter Angelo Quaglio the Elder (1778–1815). After his training, Neher went to Italy in 1819 and stayed there until 1825. He spent the last two years in Rome , where he dedicated himself specifically to architectural painting in the studio of the painter Heinrich Maria von Hess .

In 1825 he returned to Munich and established himself as a freelance artist. As a typical representative of the Biedermeier era, Neher created many costume pieces and landscapes . He also made a name for himself with his views of public places and architectural representations from many Bavarian cities.

In Hohenschwangau Castle , Neher designed the "Swan Knight's Hall" with works in the style of Peter Paul Rubens and the "Heldensaal" based on Moritz von Schwind's compositions. In his late work, Neher switched almost entirely to architectural painting. He lovingly designed the entire range of masterpieces of German architecture and is still known today because of his attention to detail.

Michael Neher died on December 4, 1876 in Munich at the age of 78.
