The fire brigade hatchet is part of the extended equipment of fire brigade members and can be attached to the fire brigade belt. The ax is standardized in DIN 14924-FBD.

The fire brigade ax consists - like the fire brigade ax - of a wedge in the longitudinal direction of the handle and a dexel in the transverse direction. The Dexel is made in such a way that it can also be used to lift underground hydrant covers if necessary . The closures of wall hydrants can also be opened with the Dexel.

There are also fire brigade axes that have a triangular key on the underside, which is intended for opening locking bars and post hydrants .

In Austria, the fire ax is no longer part of the personal equipment of fire service members, but is only optionally taken with you, for example by a respiratory protection team.
