The Congress of Women in Science and Technology ( FiNuT for short ) is an autonomous congress that has been taking place every year for four days on the Ascension weekend for more than 35 years and is organized by and for women in science and technology.

history

With the first congress (meeting at the time) in Aachen in 1977, the natural scientist and technician movement began in Germany. Many ideas and approaches that are common (and institutionalized) practice today in promoting women in science and technology were developed by women at the congress. In addition, many formal and informal networks and organizations have emerged at the congresses, for example the German Association of Female Engineers , the Association of Women in Science and Technology (NUT) eV and the magazine Koryphäe - Medium for Feminist Science and Technology .

The congress took place for the first time as a meeting of women in science and technology , then initially every six months and later annually in different cities. About 40 women attended the first meeting. The number of participants rose very quickly, peaking in the early 1990s with 700–800 participants. In the 2000s the number of participants had leveled off at between 300 and 400. For many years the congress was located at universities and colleges and the preparatory groups were anchored in universities.

Since 2010 the event has been taking place on a much smaller scale in conference houses.

subjects

The topics range from the exchange of experiences and specialist lectures to political discussions. Each congress has a key topic that is selected by the preparatory group (for example, “Sustainable provision”, “Tide change”, “Knowledge creates resistance”). In addition, there are usually events on the following topics:

Participants and Chronicle

The participants come from all over the German-speaking area, but some also come from outside of Germany. The spectrum of participants ranges from pupils to pensioners, and from professors to craftsmen.

Design and process

“Autonomous” means that there is no association or club behind the congress. At every congress there is a plenum where all congress participants are entitled to vote. The preparatory group for a congress is determined by this plenary two years in advance at the congress. The preparatory group organizes the congress independently and on its own responsibility, but is bound by the democratically made resolutions of the previous congresses.

The congress thrives on the large number of events offered, which can be lectures, workshops, excursions, exhibitions, group meetings and much more. As a rule, a call for paper for the congress is sent out in October of the previous year . The congress begins on Thursday with the opening plenum and ends with the closing plenum on Sunday.
