Fibi and her Unicorn ( English Phoebe and her Unicorn ) is a comic series that was created by Dana Simpson and has been released since 2012. The collective editions of the comic strips are published in German by HF-Ullmann-Verlag .

In the forest, the girl Fibi meets a unicorn named Lily of the Valley Samtnüster, who grants her a wish. Fibi then wishes the unicorn to be his best friend. They have some adventures together.

Recurring moments are that Fibi never practices for her piano lessons and Lily of the Valley forgets everything around her when she looks at her reflection, regardless of what she is reflected in. Whenever Fibi is impressed by the lily of the valley, she confidently and triumphantly says: "Unicorn."

  • Fibi: Fibi is a nine year old, dreamy girl. She has a lot of imagination, which is why the other children in her school think she is strange.
  • Lily of the valley velvet nostrils: Lily of the valley is a female unicorn and very proud of it. She can do magic with her horn. So that it does not stand out in the human world, it creates a protective shield against boredom, which ensures that hardly anyone notices it. She likes to eat grass and fruit.
  • Fibi's Parents: Not much is known about them, but they are often concerned about Fibi's social contacts. Her mother loves to paint and, like her father, is interested in video games.
  • Daria: Daria is Fibi's classmate and is pretty cocky. When they first met, Lily of the Valley conjured up Daria's hair and replaced it with magical hair. Daria later becomes a good friend of Fibi's. Daria has a vlog on MoiTub; an allusion on Youtube .
  • Max: Fibi's classmate. Fibis is a little in love with him. Max is enthusiastic about science and electronics. In Volume 6 you learn that he has two mothers.
  • Herr von Demutsleben: A male unicorn for whom Lily of the Valley has a great weakness. However, you only ever see his horn because he is very shy and hides in a bush.
  • Florentine Fritzi Ekelüster: She is Lily of the Valley's sister. Her last name comes from the fact that spiders fly out of her nostrils when she sneezes.
  • Teddy: Teddy is a dragon that is just the size of a human hand. He is a good friend of lilies of the valley. Instead of fire, it breathes candy and can control exactly what kind of candy it should be.

The series has been appearing as a comic strip on the GoComics online platform since January 2012, initially under the title Heavenly Nostrils . It has appeared in over 100 newspapers since 2015, now as Phoebe and her Unicorn, and is distributed by Andrews McMeel. The publisher has been publishing the series in anthologies since 2014, with seven volumes published by 2018. In the same year a first volume was published in Russian and the first three volumes in German at HF-Ullmann-Verlag . The forewords of the first two volumes come from Peter S. Beagle , the author of The Last Unicorn, and Lauren Faust , the inventor of My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic .

reception

In the United States, the comic won the 2015 Washington State Book Award for Best Book for Older Children. This was followed in 2016 by the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. The series perfectly captures the life of a fourth grader and, with its many references to popular culture and clever humor, offers entertainment not only for children but also for adults, so the reason for the price. The revised and colored version of the anthologies made it onto the New York Times bestseller lists .

In the review of the German edition, the Tagesspiegel writes that Fibi and her unicorn initially appear "terribly kitsch and at least as pink as the cover" and like something that only fans of My little Pony can inspire. But the strips combined warm-hearted charm with clever wit, similar to Calvin and Hobbes , so that readers of all ages could enjoy them. So be Fibi and her unicorn one of charmantesten, soulful and best new comic strips in recent years.
